As President-Elect, I get to attend the Chapter Leadership Institute (CLI) session as preparation for taking over as president next year.
The Institute is led by the Chapter Leadership Committee (CLC). These volunteers are past chapter presidents who give generously of their free time and pay for their expenses to provide advice to chapter around the country. Our chapter is blessed to have Karen Cortell Reisman working with us this year who has been doing a great job of working with Joan and me.
Each year the program focuses on the 5 M’s of running a chapter (Management, Membership, Meetings, Marketing and most challenging, Money). We had the opportunity to learn about best practices and see where each of our chapters stand in comparison to others and to what is expected of us from the national level.
The most interesting part of the Institute was a trip to the Arizona State University Art Museum where we had the opportunity to learn how their board of directors operates in providing leadership for the museum. It was very interesting to learn how another type of organization deals with their challenges and provided some different ideas for our chapters. How they select their board members was a very useful tip.
The good news is that NSA-VA has been doing very well in all these areas. Under the leadership of Shirley T. and Joan, we have grown in membership, programs and our bank account. The recent success of the auction is another testament to the great results we are achieving.
So now I will be using what I learned at CLI, leveraging the new relationships with other chapter leaders and working closely with the current board to put the pieces in place for another successful year for 2017-2018. The bar is high, but I know that with your help, we will all have continued success in growing the chapter together.
